Planning Your Trip

The first questions most travelers ask when they start dreaming about Egypt.

October to April is the most comfortable time, with warm sunny days and cool evenings. Summer is very hot in Luxor and Aswan, but sites are quieter and early morning visits work well.

Seven to ten days is ideal for a first visit. That is enough time for Cairo and Giza, a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan, and Abu Simbel. With more time you can add Alexandria or a few relaxing days on the Red Sea.

Most travelers start in Cairo for the Pyramids and the museums, fly to Luxor or Aswan, cruise the Nile between the two cities, then return to Cairo or continue to the Red Sea for some beach time.

Yes. Children love the Pyramids, the temples, felucca rides and the Red Sea. We plan a comfortable pace, shorter visits in the heat and family friendly hotels.

Visas and Entry

What you need before you land in Egypt. Rules can change, so always check the latest official information.

Most visitors need a tourist visa. Depending on your nationality, you can get it online before you travel or on arrival at the main airports.

You can apply on the official Egyptian government visa website, visa2egypt.gov.eg. Apply at least a week before you travel and print a copy of the approved visa.

Many nationalities can buy a visa on arrival at Cairo, Luxor, Hurghada and other international airports before passport control. Check with your embassy whether this applies to your passport.

Your passport should be valid for at least six months after your arrival date and have at least one blank page for the visa and stamps.

A standard single entry tourist visa usually allows a stay of up to 30 days. Ask the official visa authority if you plan a longer stay.

Yes. Every traveler, including children and babies, needs a valid passport and their own visa.

There are usually no special vaccination requirements for travelers arriving from Europe or North America. Check with your doctor or travel clinic a few weeks before you travel.

It is not required to enter Egypt, but we strongly recommend travel insurance that covers medical care and trip cancellation.

What to expect from your guide, your driver and a private day of sightseeing.

Yes. Our tours are private, which means you travel only with your own family or friends, with your own guide and vehicle.

Your guide is a licensed Egyptologist who studied the history of ancient Egypt and loves to share it with travelers.

Our guides are multilingual. English is the most common, and other languages can be arranged on request, so let us know your preference when you book.

Most of our tours include the entrance tickets to the sites in the itinerary. Each tour page shows exactly which tickets are included.

You travel in a clean, air conditioned vehicle with an experienced driver. The size of the vehicle depends on your group.

Yes. Pickup times are flexible, and we often suggest an early start to enjoy the sites before the heat and the crowds.

This depends on the tour, and each tour page shows whether lunch is included. Your guide can also recommend good local restaurants.

Yes. Private airport, train station and hotel transfers are available and are part of many of our packages.

Yes. Many sites have uneven ground and steps, so tell us about any needs in advance and we will plan a comfortable pace and route for you.

Most day tours last between four and eight hours. Tours with hours in their name, like a three hour visit, are shorter and easy to combine.

Nile Cruises and Dahabiyas

Everything about sailing the Nile between Luxor and Aswan.

Most cruises last four or five days. The five day cruise starts in Luxor and the four day cruise starts in Aswan, and longer itineraries are also available.

A classic cruise visits Karnak and Luxor temples, the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Hatshepsut in Luxor, the temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo, and the Philae Temple and High Dam in Aswan.

Our cruises include full board with breakfast, lunch and dinner, guided visits with a private Egyptologist, entrance tickets and transfers. Each cruise page lists the exact inclusions.

A dahabiya is a traditional sailing boat with only a few cabins. It offers a quieter and more personal way to sail the Nile and can stop at smaller sites that big cruise ships pass by.

Cruise ships offer more facilities such as a pool and entertainment. A dahabiya is calmer and more intimate. Both are lovely, and we are happy to help you decide.

Each cruise sails on fixed days of the week. You can see the departure days from Luxor and from Aswan on every cruise page.

Cabins have a private bathroom, air conditioning and a window with a view of the Nile. Many of the cruises we offer have upper deck cabins.

Yes. Children enjoy the deck, the pool and life on the river, and the guided visits are adapted for families.

Light comfortable clothes for the day and a light jacket for cool evenings and breezy decks. Some cruises have a themed evening, so a smart outfit is nice to bring.

Yes. Abu Simbel can be added as a day trip from Aswan or as an overnight stay, which lets you see the temples in the quiet of the evening and early morning.

Lake Nasser and Abu Simbel

The quieter side of Egypt, sailing between Aswan and the temples of Abu Simbel.

A Lake Nasser cruise sails between Aswan and Abu Simbel, visiting Nubian temples that you can only reach by boat. It is one of the most peaceful ways to see Egypt.

Lake Nasser cruises usually last four or five days, depending on whether you sail from Aswan to Abu Simbel or the other way around.

Highlights include Kalabsha, Amada, Wadi El Seboua and Qasr Ibrim, ending or starting with the great temples of Abu Simbel.

Abu Simbel was built by Ramses II more than 3,000 years ago and was moved piece by piece in the 1960s to save it from the rising waters of the lake. It is one of the most impressive sites in Egypt.

Twice a year, around 22 February and 22 October, the rising sun shines into the temple and lights up the statues in the inner sanctuary. It is a popular event, so book early if you want to see it.

Yes. The Sound and Light Show takes place in the evening and is easiest to enjoy when you stay overnight in Abu Simbel or on a Lake Nasser cruise.

Yes. Entering the Great Pyramid of Khufu needs an extra ticket. The passages are narrow and steep, so it is not recommended if you do not like small spaces.

Yes. The Grand Egyptian Museum near the Pyramids of Giza is open and displays the treasures of Tutankhamun. We recommend at least half a day for your visit.

Early morning is best. It is cooler, the light is beautiful and the sites are calmer before the big groups arrive.

Yes. His tomb is in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor and needs an extra ticket. His golden treasures are displayed in the Grand Egyptian Museum.

Egypt is sunny and dry almost all year. Winters are mild and pleasant, and summers are hot, especially in Luxor and Aswan.

Rain is rare. Cairo and Alexandria can see a few rainy days in winter, while Luxor and Aswan stay dry almost all year.

Days are warm, but evenings and early mornings can be cool, especially in the desert and on the river. Bring a light jacket or sweater.

Light, loose and breathable clothes, ideally covering your shoulders and knees, plus a light jacket for the evenings and a smarter outfit for dinner.

Comfortable closed walking shoes or good sandals. You will walk on sand, stones and uneven ground at many sites.

Yes. A hat, sunglasses and high factor sunscreen are essential all year, and they are even more important in summer.

A refillable bottle, a small backpack, a power bank, any personal medicines and some small notes for tips.

Egypt uses 220 volt power with the round two pin plugs common in Europe. Bring an adapter if your devices use a different plug.

Yes. Temperatures in Luxor and Aswan can be very high in June, July and August. We plan visits early in the morning and late in the afternoon so you rest in the hottest hours.

Loose clothes that cover the shoulders and knees are comfortable and respectful. A light scarf is useful for visiting mosques.

We recommend drinking bottled or filtered water, which is easy to find everywhere. Hotels and cruises provide bottled water.

Drink bottled water, wash your hands often, eat freshly cooked food and be careful with raw salads and ice in places you do not know.

Cover your shoulders and knees. Women should cover their hair in mosques, and everyone removes their shoes before entering a mosque.

Alcohol is available in hotels, on cruises and in many tourist restaurants. Drinking in public places is not common, so enjoy it where it is served.
